2 Ways You Can Try To Get Rid Of Wasps

by Jenny Banks

Wasps can be very aggressive and can actually chase you away from their nesting area, which would be bad if they are creating a nest around your doors or anywhere else in your house. If you have wasps, then you need to figure out how to get them under control and get rid of them so that you can go outside without worrying about nasty flying bullies attacking you, your kids, or your pets.

Soap and Water

This is something you should only use on smaller nests, ones that are just getting started. What you need to do is get an empty spray bottle and fill it with a mix of dish soap and water. You don't need to have a lot of soap in there. You aren't looking for big bubbles—you just need to have some soap in the water. You can take that and spray the wasps and the nest with it. The soap will kill the wasps because it causes the wasps to not be able to breathe. Wasps use something called spiracles to breathe. When they are exposed to the soap, the wasps' spiracles get blocked, suffocating the wasp.

Wasp Traps

You can also use wasp traps to help get rid of wasps. These traps are some kind of container with some sugar water in the bottom. The sugar water attracts the wasps, so they fly down into the trap. With the way that the trap is built, they aren't able to fly back out of the trap, so they get stuck there and die. You can buy wasp traps, or you can make your own. The way to do that is to get a two-liter bottle and cut off the top part of it. You take that part and flip it over, put it in the bottom part of the bottle, and then add the sugar water. You may also want to put holes in the side so that you can hang the trap. The best way to make sure that you are catching the problematic wasps is to place the trap near where the nest is being built.

If your wasp infestation is large or you just don't want to run the risk of being stung or not getting rid of the wasps altogether, you should call an exterminator and let them do the job. They will be able to get rid of the wasps and remove the nest so that new wasps aren't tempted to move in.
