Deterring Robbers From Stealing From Your Home

by Jenny Banks

No one wants to have someone steal from their home. If you are a homeowner, you will need to do whatever you can to make your home secure if you do not want to lose anything to theft. There are several different ways that you can go about robber-proofing your home. Here are some ideas that you can use to help make your house safer from break-ins.

Alarm System

Installing a security system for your home can help keep thieves away. An alarm will sound if someone tries to enter and an off-site security service will be notified that there was a problem. They, in turn, will notify your local police department. Security systems work great at keeping thieves from even bothering to try to enter. You can place stickers on your windows and signs in front of your property alerting everyone that your house is equipped with an alarm system.

Getting A Dog

Dogs can be thief deterrents. Get a large dog that will make a lot of sound if someone tries to break into your home. No thief will want to try to wrestle a dog to get to your belongings, as they can sustain injuries. You can place a "Beware Of Dog" sign on your property to alert people that you are well protected.

Change Your Habits

Some of your everyday habits can alert potential thieves that you are not going to be home. Change this by waving at your house when you leave. If anyone is watching from a secret spot, they will think someone is still inside your home. You should refrain from alerting people when you are going away for any extended period. Do not announce your departure on social media websites and do not use the check-in feature. This just alerts people that you are not home, and you never know who may be wanting to gain entry.

Lighting And Shrubs

Make sure to have your home lit well during the dark hours. You will want to leave a few lights on inside, as well as have a flood light and porch lights on outdoors. Use a pre-programmable light changer to switch the lights frequently from inside, if you are not at home.

Keep any shrubs and trees trimmed. You do not want to give the thief a ready-made hiding spot. Keep larger items locked away in the garage or shed so that they can not be used as something to hide behind.
